Furfural: Building Block for Renewable Fuels and Chemicals
Soek Sin Teh1*; Harrison Lau Lik Nang1; Nursyairah Jalil1 and Nur Sulihatimarsyila Abd Wafti1

Furfural is a precursor to furan-based chemicals and serves as a major green chemical for the production of biofuels and biochemicals. The need to replace fossil fuels with renewable alternatives is now acknowledged with the rise in global energy demand and environmental awareness. Several furanic compounds can be obtained from lignocellulose biomass, including furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and 2,5-dimethylfuran. The presence of the aldehyde group and conjugated structure of furfural enables it to undergo a number of reactions for various commercial uses including industrial manufacturing, food flavoring, fragrance in personal care products and pesticide. It exhibits high solubility in alcohol and ether, and could be dissolved in water up to 8.3% at 20°C.
