Biomass energy is a general term that refers to the energy that can be derived from plant and animal materials, through a variety of conversion and end-use processes. Not all biomass resources can be easily exploited. It is generally easier to utilise materials which are produced as byproducts of processing since sufficiently large quantities will then be available at a single site. Oil palm is currently the most important agricultural crop in Malaysia. Parallel increases in the amount of biomass available from palm oil mills for use as energy resources can also be expected. The most important sources of biomass energy in Malaysia at the moment are the wastes produced from palm oil mills.
