What is exactly is sustainability?
MENON, N. RaviWhat exactly is meant by sustainability? It is actually the capacity to endure. It is the survival capacity of natural systems against the demand of social challenges faced by humanity. Let us look at a practical example. If we take the case of Malaysia, we have a responsibility to look at the welfare of the people. We want to ensure that all the citizens have enough income to feed themselves, educate their children and ensure affordable medical treatment. Oil palm cultivation was an answer to that as the yield is high compared to any other oilseed. For this, as a starting point, the rubber plantations were converted to oil palm and as the profitability was good more land was converted in the early years for oil palm cultivation. The population rise encouraged an increase in the oil palm cultivation as the country needed the funds for the sustainable improvement in the living standards of its people. Presently, most of the not so choosy Malaysians lead a reasonably comfortable life.
