Integrated Bioenergy Value Chain for Transitioning from Oil Palm Biomass
Soh Kheang Loh1*In the third session (Session 3) of the National Seminar on Palm Oil Milling, Refining, Environment and Quality 2024 (POMREQ 2024, 30 September-1 October 2024) at Hilton Hotel Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, 4 industry experts and a government official presented their views on renewable energy (RE). RE includes biogas, biomass, solar, small hydropower, geothermal, etc., which can be derived from bioresources. Carbon-rich oil palm biomass is the main feedstock for RE from the palm oil industry. Carbon, the element of life, can be either advantageous or detrimental, depending on the types of feedstock, its utilisation and management. Carbon-rich and energy-dense fossil fuels are the main sources requiring decarbonisation as the emitted carbon dioxide is associated with increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, causing global warming and climate change.
