The production of dry matter by plants mainly depends on two processes, I) the ability to fix atmospheric CO in photosynthesis and 2) the proportion of the fixed carbon retained after allowing for losses by respiration. The water use of plants is also linked to their productivity and one means to measure water use is by monitoring the evapotranspiration from the foliage.
